NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – NJ Transit and its train engineers are headed to Washington, D.C. on Monday to meet with a federal mediation board in an effort to avoid a rail shutdown. The two sides remain at odds over annual wages for engineers. Tom Haas, the chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, said engineers haven’t seen a salary increase in six years. Engineers could strike as soon as Friday, stopping all commuter rail service.

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – A ground stop was called at Newark Liberty International Airport Friday morning due to runway construction, according to the FAA. The airport is experiencing delays of over an hour, the agency said. Runway construction, staffing shortages and equipment trouble have caused numerous delays and cancellations at Newark since last week. Air traffic controllers lost contact with planes over the airport last Monday, according to the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – A woman was sexually assaulted and threatened with a knife in the Bronx on Thursday, according to the NYPD. Police said it happened on Sampson Avenue around 11:30 p.m. The 24-year-old victim was held at knifepoint and had her cellphone, purse and cash stolen, according to authorities. Police said she was also sexually assaulted. The victim was taken to a local hospital, according to authorities. Police described the suspect as a man in his 30s.
