Nebraska defensive backs began spring workouts as the team’s largest and most familiar position group. That remains true a few months later. The secondary didn’t remain static — veteran Malcolm Hartzog is moving closer to the line of scrimmage at nickelback, senior safety DeShon Singleton took reps at the rover spot and transfer Andrew Marshall is firmly in the cornerback mix. A variety of underclassmen made practice pushes too.

Tucker Timmerman pitched like an ace. And Nebraska baseball ended a long Friday drought. Timmerman twirled a gem into the late innings and the Huskers offense produced just enough for a cathartic 3-2 victory over Michigan at Haymarket Park. The right-hander — making his weekend starting debut — went seven strong frames as NU won its second Big Ten series opener in nine tries this spring.

LINCOLN — The fight is entering the late rounds for Nebraska baseball. With midweek games finished, there’s clarity for the Huskers with only two more weekends of baseball guaranteed. Win Big Ten games and keep playing. Don’t, and summer ball begins early. For all its shortcomings, Big Red continues to battle. It’s won three straight league series after dropping Friday games. It nearly completed a Tuesday comeback against Creighton after trailing by six runs halfway through.

The newspaper article printed on three pieces of paper hangs above the desk in Drew Christo’s room. A daily reminder of what really matters. That story — published in December 1998 in The Omaha World-Herald — isn’t about the Nebraska pitcher, though it might as well be. It featured a Husker football quarterback who could have played elsewhere or quit or brooded over challenging circumstances. Instead, he battled and stayed ready for the call.

The crowd of large bodies often gathered in an end zone away from quarterbacks and skill players. A grinding, quiet spring of practices suited Nebraska offensive linemen just fine. The position group might not be the most improved (receivers), most interesting (tight ends) or most high profile (quarterbacks) within the offense. But it exited April as the most solid, built on returners, impact transfers and quality depth led by NU’s longest-tenured assistant coach.

“Just trying to be too perfect. You gotta go out and not be afraid to crash and burn.” Nebraska sought "ferociousness" but got tentative offense instead before falling behind late on a flurry of Michigan bunts. The cost was a potential missed sweep. https://t.co/o3hGfE0nb2

Final: Michigan 3, Nebraska 1. Wolverines break an eighth-inning tie when three straight bunting hitters reach base. NU settles for the series win when its pitching was good enough for a sweep. Regular season wraps next week at Purdue.

Michigan works a leadoff walk, then executes three straight right-side bunts in which the batter reaches base. The third is an RBI squeeze from Brayden Jefferis. #Huskers trailing again, 2-1, mid 8th.
