First downs and second guesses:I decided 50 years ago that I preferred to write about college football over pro football. But look at what showed up on my computer screen last week: “Tennessee quarterback leaves after contract dispute.”That’s not the Tennessee Titans. That’s the University of Tennessee. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava led the Volunteers to the College Football Playoff last year. Apparently he and his handlers/agent/family thought he had earned a raise in NIL funds.

Greg McDermott sure knows how to work the transfer portal. Mac and Creighton have pulled off a major coup in luring legacy Bluejay Alan Huss back to Omaha to prepare as the next head men's basketball coach. Dana Altman. Greg McDermott. Alan Huss. Though there are never any guarantees with coaching hires, this should be a historic move that will keep CU in the hunt for Big East titles and deep NCAA runs. The window stays open. It’s an unbelievable fit.

First downs and second guesses:Kirsten Bernthal Booth’s career at Creighton was legendary. She created an elite college volleyball program on a blank canvas. She started a Creighton tradition. She made CU volleyball appointment viewing in the long shadow of the Husker machine in Lincoln. Booth belongs next to Bluejay icons like Bruce Rasmussen, Jim Hendry, Bob Warming, Dana Altman and Greg McDermott. Which made her awkward farewell on Monday all the more odd.

“We’re No. 69! We’re No. 69!”Come on. I’m kidding. Nebraska won the College Basketball Crown championship on Sunday. Fred Hoiberg’s Huskers beat UCF 77-66 to win the inaugural “Crown” postseason basketball tournament. After closing the regular-season on a five-game losing streak, the Huskers won four straight. What happened in Las Vegas isn’t staying in Vegas. The Huskers are bringing home a crown. That’s a big deal. Embrace the moment. Embrace the effort.
