The Office of National Statistics (ONS) said the rate of consumer prices index inflation eased to 2.6% for the year to March, from 2.8% in February. But there has been concern that this is only a temporary fall and there is likely to be further increases. The data showed that food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose by 3% in the 12 months to March 2025, down from 3.3% in the 12 months to February 2025.

The latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in the Labour Market in the regions: April 2025 revealed there were 84,000 jobs vacant in the period January to March 2025 – down from 107,000 in the same period in 2024. The complicated picture also showed vacancies were down from the previous quarter (October to December 2024) by 4,000 or 4.6%.

Consumer spending in pubs, bars and clubs saw an increase of 0.8% in spending growth and 1.4% in transaction growth in March. Restaurants, cafés and bakeries didn’t fare as well with spending down 0.2% and 0.5% respectively. While takeaways and fast food were down 0.8 and 4.2% - perhaps suggesting consumers are prioritising experiences over eating and drinking at home.

According to the CGA by NIQ’s Daily Drinks Tracker, average drinks sales in the week to 5 April 2025 were up by 5% from the same period in April 2024. This followed a positive March 2025 for sales, which were up by 2%. According to CGA by NIQ, this raised hopes for some sustained real-terms growth for the on premise after a sluggish start to 2025.
