The Discovery Point redevelopment has been given a £3.5m funding boost from the National Lottery. Plans for the funds include changes to the museum, including two new exhibitions exploring Antarctica’s “magnetic pull” on explorers and how Discovery’s voyages helped shape science. A new bistro and upgraded learning facilities also form part of the plans. RSS Discovery itself is undergoing restoration works, which will continue with the new funding.

A violent rapist from Yorkshire who attacked two women in Scotland has been jailed for 12 years. James McCall was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on April 16, after being convicted of nine charges. The campaign of abuse – which spanned between 2007 and 2019 – saw the 49 year-old rape both victims. McCall’s crimes occurred at different addresses in Lanarkshire, including Uddingston and East Kilbride.

The opening date for the new Yoker to Renfrew bridge has been confirmed. Linking the two areas for the first time, the 184m bridge is the first opening road bridge across the Clyde. Renfrewshire Council confirmed that the bridge would be open to traffic and pedestrians from Friday, May 9. In a post on social media, SNP councillor John Shaw said that there would be a formal opening on May 8, but it would be a closed ceremony.

A health board did not “adequately consider” the vulnerability of a patient with addiction issues who died shortly after being discharged from hospital. The patient was initially admitted to intensive care after suffering a head injury from a fall. They were later transferred to a different hospital after their condition improved, where they received addiction treatment as well as further scans and reviews. After this, the patient was deemed fit for discharge.

A Glasgow man has been jailed for four years after defrauding Leeds City Council out of more than £710,000. Aftab Baig, 47, made fraudulent grant claims against 32 properties, which were branches of Greggs, arranging for the money to go into his business account. The money came from the Small Business Grant Fund, one of several government schemes to help small businesses with business rates relief during the pandemic.
