DARLINGTON — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged City Councilwoman Elaine R. Reed and her son, Lorand Clayton Reed, with assault and battery May 1. Elaine R. Reed, 78, was charged with third degree assault and battery. Lorand Clayton Reed, 54, was charged with second degree assault and battery. According to a SLED arrest warrant, Elaine Reed injured a person Oct. 5, 2024, on Timmonsville Highway in Darlington County.

DARLINGTON — The State Law Enforcement Division has charged a former Darlington Police Department sergeant with breach of trust with fraudulent intent — value more than $2,000 and less than $10,000 — and misconduct in office. Mark Anthony Hayes Jr., 39, was charged April 17. Hayes was employed at the Darlington Police Department as a certified law enforcement officer when he allegedly gave a confidential informant vape pens from a seizure he conducted weeks earlier.

FLORENCE — The Florence County Sheriff’s Office arrested four people in connection to child abuse at Florence’s Maranatha Christian School. A day care worker at the school, 73-year-old Laurin B. Boyce, repeatedly slammed a child’s head into a crib, covered the child’s head with a blanket, pressed down on the child’s head and dragged the child out of the room, according to a press release from the Florence County Sheriff's Office. The release did not list the child's age. Boyce was arrested Feb.
