Laughter, soap bubbles and the smell of roasting meats filled the air Saturday at the Edisto Memorial Gardens as Orangeburg’s Festival of Roses kicked off its 52nd year. Orangeburg resident Elijah Williams said what was on a lot of people’s minds Saturday. “We are having fun,” the 6-year-old said after visiting several bounce houses. Jocelyn Dandridge, 7, was decked out in pink, ready to wow those gathered at the Garden Stage with her clogging and hip-hop dancing routine.

The 52nd annual Festival of Roses is underway today at the Edisto Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg. The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. and will last until 6 p.m. It continues Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.The festival will have something for all ages to enjoy, including vendors, entertainment, food and fellowship. Entertainment will be offered on both the Garden Stage and the Centennial Park stage at the gardens.

The Edisto Memorial Gardens will be full of color for this year’s Festival of Roses. "There will be plenty for people to see," City of Orangeburg Superintendent of Parks Jay Hiers said. "There are some late bloomers coming on. There is always plenty of color out there."The festival will be held May 2-4. A new rose -- "Dee-Lish", a hybrid pinkish, purple tea rose, will make its Garden debut, though the rose will not be on sale. Some roses were still being planted Monday.

Two new restaurants have opened in Orangeburg and three others are expected to open in May. Waffle House and Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened earlier this month at the Magnolia Village shopping center on North Road next to Walmart. Tropical Smoothie Café opened April 18 at 129 Magnolia Village Parkway. Waffle House opened April 22 at 141 Magnolia Village Parkway. Waffle House is currently open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant expects to open 24 hours a day in the coming weeks.

An Orangeburg restaurant has closed. International House of Pancakes Corp. has closed its restaurant at 2567 North Road near Orangeburg Preparatory School's upper campus. A sign posted on the restaurant's door informed customers of the closure and encouraged customers to visit other IHOP locations in Lexington, Sumter and Walterboro. An email message left with IHOP's media contact was not returned in time for publication.
