At 6:05 p.m. Friday, Mikal Mahdi was pronounced dead after his execution by a three-member firing squad. Mahdi, 43, chose his method of execution two weeks ago. It’s the same method he used when he killed a store clerk in North Carolina and an off-duty Orangeburg Department of Public Safety officer during a three-day crime spree in July 2004. Mahdi had been serving a death row sentence since 2006 at the Broad River Road Correctional Institute in Columbia.

Orangeburg Department of Public SafetyA 35-year-old Orangeburg woman claims a man punched her in the face and shot at her when she refused to work as a prostitute, according to an incident report. The incident started at a Lancaster Street residence on April 3. The woman told police that she attempted to leave the residence, but a man told her she couldn’t leave unless “she went on the streets to make money,” the report states.

A former Holly Hill Academy teacher admitted in court that she had an illegal sexual relationship with a student. Reagan Mobley Anderson, 28, of Holly Hill, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and battery on Thursday. Circuit Judge Charles J. McCutchen sentenced Anderson to eight years in prison during a hearing at the Orangeburg County Courthouse. Because Anderson served one day in jail, McCutchen suspended her term to probation for five years.

Orangeburg County Sheriff’s OfficeAn 18-year-old Blythewood man told deputies a firearm fell from a dresser and discharged. The bullet struck his buttocks, according to the incident report. Deputies spoke with the man at MUSC Health-Orangeburg around 11:50 p.m. on April 2. The man’s girlfriend brought him to the hospital for treatment. She said the incident occurred at a friend’s home in Gaston. She couldn’t describe the home or name the friend, the report claims.

A 47-year-old Lexington man is in prison for committing domestic violence in Orangeburg County. James Daniel Hancock, of Southland Drive, pleaded guilty to first-degree domestic violence during a recent term of court held at the Orangeburg County Courthouse. Circuit Judge Heath P. Taylor sentenced him to prison for 10 years. After Hancock serves three years in prison, his term will be suspended to probation for two years. Taylor gave him credit for spending 276 days in jail.
