The State College Area School Board on Monday heard an updated cost estimate and got a look at tentative designs for the planned new Park Forest Middle School. Current estimated costs for the 270,000-square-foot building on Little Lion Drive are $127.9 million to $136.9 million including site work, construction, escalation estimates, soft costs and contingencies, according to a presentation by Jeff Straub of project architect Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates.

Local letter carriers will once again join a nationwide effort to battle food insecurity with the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday. Post offices in State College, Bellefonte, Boalsburg, Lemont and Pine Grove Mills will be participating in the collection. Residents are asked to leave non-perishable food items at their mailboxes or drop them off at their local post office.

Members of the Centre County hospitality industry and the broader community are coming together to support the family of a 22-year-old who died during the severe storm that tore through the region last week. Bryce Lowman was attempting to extinguish a mulch fire the evening of April 29 on the 1500 block of University Drive in State College when he was electrocuted by a damaged power line, borough police said.

Bellefonte will end its relationship with the Centre Area Transportation Authority this summer and partner with the Centre County Office of Transportation Services to fill the gap in public transit for borough residents. Following unanimous votes by Borough Council on Monday, Bellefonte will subsidize rides for residents who do not already qualify for free or reduced fares on the county’s on-demand, door-to-door transportation program beginning in July.

Emergency responders from throughout Centre County were praised this week for their efforts in the wake of the powerful April 29 storm that caused widespread damage, days-long power outages for thousands and one death. Centre County’s Board of Commissioners opened their meeting on Tuesday by recognizing 911 dispatchers, Emergency Management Agency staff, local police, fire departments and EMS and power company workers.
