An insight into a bygone Caithness era is revealed in a fascinating document dating from the 1920s. The Sandside Journal belongs to Thurso historian Alan McIvor and gives a glimpse of life experienced at Sandside House in Reay and around the estate almost a hundred years ago.

Changes have been implemented by NHS Highland which will lead to a senior clinician providing substantive cover for psychiatry in Caithness over the next few months. That was said by the health authority in response to a call from Caithness councillors for answers over “the significant cost” of providing locum psychiatrists in the north.

A photography competition is being held as part of the events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Castletown Heritage Centre. The event is open to amateur photographers aged 17 and under and aims to create interest in the youngsters in their Caithness heritage, landscape and people. It is free to enter.

A Caithness roads campaigner has urged Scottish Transport Secretary, Fiona Hyslop, to “get something done about the utterly appalling state” of council-maintained roads in the far north. Iain Gregory, the co-founder of Caithness Roads Recovery, said that after more than three years of “relentless campaigning” the situation has reached breaking point. He wrote to Ms Hyslop in “the hope we can finally get the message across to the Scottish Government”.

The new CD by Caithness pianist and composer James Ross has been inspired by the scenery of the far north and the work of the celebrated Dunbeath author, Neil Gunn. Landscape to Light, which takes its title from a series of essays by Gunn, is to be released next month but started life two years ago.
