Disruption is expected later this month when the Far North Line is closed for three weeks as part of a major upgrade of the track. As revealed by the John O’Groat Journal in March, Network Rail is investing £11.5million to refurbish and replace key sections of the line, helping to improve the long-term reliability of rail services in the north of Scotland.

Crofters are asking government to take action to “control predation” by sea eagles after claims that attacks on lambs have reached unprecedented levels. The Scottish Crofting Federation says that weather and predation are the two biggest threats to newborn lambs, with white-tailed eagles being a growing problem. They say that reports suggests the reintroduced birds are ranging further and have been spotted in new parts of Scotland, as well as in larger numbers.

Heading into summer, it’s the perfect time of year to see nature at its best, and we’ve been lucky in the Highlands recently with the long spell of dry and sunny weather – even if it wasn’t always the warmest. The cool northerly winds definitely took the edge off the heat, but the spring flowers seem to have been having a bumper year, in my experience.

Work on the controversial Strathy South wind farm has begun nearly two decades since the scheme was mooted, SSE has announced. The energy giant said on Tuesday that early works on the 208MW onshore development in north Sutherland had started. A final investment decision on the £400 million project adjacent to the Strathy North wind farm was made in December.

Twenty athletes from Inverness orienteering club (INVOC) attended the British Orienteering Championships at the weekend, held this year in the Lake District. The event was held over two days with an individual competition and a team relay. The locations for this year were Grasmere and Bigland. Both these areas involve highly technical map-reading skills to navigate over the complex terrain, and physical ability of cross-country running over the hills and undergrowth.
