Published: 06:00, 08 April 2025 A lack of sleep and work-life balance were among the areas impacting the mental health of farmers and crofters, according to a new survey. Farmstrong Scotland said the results of its latest research show that wellbeing in the agricultural sector is lower than in the Scottish population as a whole. More than one-third of respondents fell into the low wellbeing category, when compared to the most recent Scottish Health Survey (2023).

The route along the former railway line at Invergarry has been closed on safety grounds since 2023 as a steep slope above the path was cleared of trees. The closure meant the Great Glen Way was diverted onto the east side of Loch Oich for two years – so after seeing that the route had just reopened, I had to go and revisit this classic circuit.

Beaver Scouts from Thurso and Reay combined forces to take part in a litter pick around the 2nd Thurso Scout Hall, St Anne’s Church and Viewfirth last weekend. The activity formed part of the Beaver Scout community badge, and the group hosted a visit by Alexander Glasgow, who was representing Thurso in Colour. The activity also highlighted Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Spring Clean Scotland campaign which runs to April 21.

More than £45 million will be spent across Caithness and Sutherland to help get homes and businesses set up to receive more power. SSEN Distribution has named the contractor which will work on the renewal and reinforcement of the electricity distribution network in the far north. This includes renewing wooden poles and overhead lines, upgrading and updating substations and making improvements to the underground cable network.

A forest being felled to fuel the Wick District Heating Scheme will be restored to peat bog to improve its biodiversity and carbon credentials. The 87-hectare site at Braehour Forest, around six miles south of Halkirk, is in the process of being cleared, and was originally intended to be replanted with commercial conifer crops. However, Forestry and Land Scotland has now notified Highland Council that it intends to “re-wet” this part of the wider Achilbster site.
