An animal sanctuary has rescued ‘the smallest grey seal pup it has ever seen’ after it was found injured on a beach in Shetland. The pup was found by a dog walker climbing up a beach towards St Ninian’s Isle on Thursday morning. Scottish SPCA inspector Vhairi Graham attended the scene and found the half-moulted pup was covered in small wounds, thought to have been caused by birds pecking at the seal’s face, body and flippers.

A pod of orcas has been spotted chasing a seal through a salmon farm in Shetland. A worker at the Scottish Sea Farms site in the Ness of Setter caught the moment on camera. The killer whales were pursuing the seal through the cages surfacing metres away from Sam Jamieson’s boat. The pod is thought to be the 27s, named after its matriarch in the Scottish Killer Whale ID Catalogue. Last year, a newborn orca calf was spotted travelling with its pod off the coast of Fraserburgh.
