    At a meeting this afternoon, Greenock Medical Aid Society’s (GMAS) board of trustees made the decision to permanently close Glenfield Care Home on Bedford Street. GMAS announced in April that the home was facing closure due to 'rising costs' and 'sector-wide challenges' which had led the charity to conclude it was ‘impossible’ for them to continue to operate the home.

    The proposals relate to the former Queens Hotel at Ashburn Gate, which has lain empty for years and fallen into serious disrepair. In its heyday the building was a thriving part of Gourock’s hospitality and tourist trade and was later converted into a care home for the elderly before being closed for good in 2013.

    The Loyal Orange Lodge District 19 has requested permission to hold the procession on Saturday, June 28 at 9.30am. Around 60 people would be involved in the parade, which organisers say is being held as part of their annual Boyne celebration. The proposed route would start at Boglestone Avenue and proceed along Ardmore Road, Springhill Road, Balfour Street, Shore Street, Princes Street, John Wood Street, Bay Street and Fore Street before arriving at Port Glasgow’s cenotaph.

    COMMUTERS are facing disruption this morning as fresh works get underway on a busy Greenock street. A three-way control system has been put in place on Dalrymple Street to allow Scottish Power Energy Networks to carry out work to install a cable for a new connection on the street. Temporary traffic lights have been set up at either end of the area affected by the works, as well as on Nicolson Street.
