    The City of Brampton is cracking down on so-called “peddlers” selling goods like flags, fruits, vegetables and other wares at temporary roadside stands or while walking through public spaces. These travelling vendors must now obtain a licence under the city’s newly updated and consolidated Mobile Licensing Bylaw. Licensing carries a $116 fee and must be renewed annually.

    Former Brampton chief administrative officer (CAO) David Barrick has been paid more than $1 million by Brampton taxpayers despite his departure from the city in February 2021. According to Ontario’s annual Sunshine List, which lists all public sector employees earning $100,000 per year or more, Barrick has been paid $1,075,568.61 in salary and $72,924.70 in taxable benefits since his departure more than four years ago.

    Brampton’s mayor and some city councillors are defending council’s decision to massively increase minor variance application fees, and said the move is partially aimed at punishing residential landlords who don’t follow the city’s bylaws. Based on a staff report and recommendations in December 2024 citing application processing cost recovery as the main reason, council approved increases to its previous application fee structure.

    The City of Brampton is set to unveil the restored wetland at Loafer’s Lake on Saturday, May 31 and will mark the occasion with the inaugural “Grow Green” festival. “This year’s festival theme is Wetlands and marks the official opening of the restored Loafer’s Lake Wetland, a project funded in part through the Government of Ontario’s Wetlands Conservation Partner Program,” the city said in a release, adding the event will coincide with World Environment Day.

    The City of Brampton hosted its annual Citizens of the Year awards during a ceremony on May 8 at the Rose Theatre. According to a release from the city, Brampton began honouring citizens who make meaningful achievements to the community in public service, arts and sports in 1974 and has since honoured more than 3,500 residents. The format has changed over the years and the city awarded several recipients across six categories for 2024.

Smith can hold as many referendums as she wants, but Alberta separation is a pipe dream that will never happen. After the Quebec close call in 1995, the feds passed the Clarity Act, which makes separation virtually impossible even if a majority votes "yes". Which they won't.
