Public Advocate Jumaane Williams urged the Adams administration Monday to look at ways to reduce the city’s jail population, which has surged to 7,405 and forced the Correction Department to begin housing more men in the Rikers Island jail built for women and expand limits of bed-count in several other jails. Since Jan. 3, the daily jail population has spiked by nearly 900 people – from 6,524 to 7,405 or a jump of 13.5%, according to the Vera Institute.
