BANFF NATIONAL PARK – A rockfall has killed at least one hiker and injured others near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park, while others may still be missing. Drones and search dogs are on scene to try to locate any missing people. According to the Slow & Steady Hikers group, one of their members died in the rockslide on Thursday afternoon (June 19). In a social media post, the administrator of the site, Andy Dragt, said another member broke her arm.

CANMORE – A series of capital projects were cancelled and $1.039 million from reserves will be used to offset costs with the vacancy tax not able to start until 2026. Canmore council unanimously approved at its Tuesday (May 27) special meeting amending the $10.3 million in staffing costs and housing-related funding originally meant to be collected this year for its vacancy tax.

CANMORE – Property owners will soon have their tax bill for 2025 in Canmore. Council approved the annual tax rate bylaw at its Tuesday (May 27) special meeting, having received legal certainty from the Court of King’s Bench for its vacancy tax and updated figures for the provincial education tax. While the budget was approved earlier this year, the legal process for the vacancy tax pushed back a final approval of the tax rate by council.

Fair Future Canmore, a group of roughly 1,000 people opposed to Canmore’s vacancy tax, filed its intent to appeal against a Court of King’s Bench decision that allowed the new tax to proceed, starting in 2026.

CANMORE – No net decrease in public parking surface lots, buildings no more than two-and-a-half stories on Main and 10th streets and looking at an optional instead of permanent year-round pedestrian zone were part of a series of amendments at Canmore’s downtown area redevelopment plan (ARP). Council directed Town staff to return to its July 8 meeting for consideration of second reading, following a slew of changes brought forward by elected officials during their Tuesday (May 27) meeting.
