Both brands have reported that data such as customer names and email addresses has been accessed, although financial information has not been affected. Outdoor clothing brand North Face said it suffered a “small-scale” attack on its website in April, after discovering “unusual activity”. The US business said it was the victim of a “credential stuffing attack”, where account authentication information has been stolen from another source, such as through breaches of other websites.

Analysts believe this move, which once seemed unthinkable, is very much on the cards, as Labour MP Clive Lewis described the collapse of KKR’s rescue deal for Thames Water as a reckoning; a moment that “exposes the complete bankruptcy of the privatised water model”. The Government doesn’t sound keen on the idea, with the Environment Secretary warning that keeping Thames Water and other utility firms afloat through public ownership could draw money away from the NHS.

The deal, which was agreed in March and values the high street chain at £76 million, will see the WH Smith name disappear from British high streets and be replaced by brand TGJones. All of the approximately 480 stores and 5,000 staff working for the high street businesses will move under Modella Capital’s ownership as part of the deal.

Britain’s biggest water supplier, which has 16 million customers, chose KKR at the end of March to be its preferred bidder under plans to invest around £4 billion of new equity to help keep the financially stricken company afloat. But Thames Water said KKR was now not “in a position to proceed” and that its status as preferred bidder had lapsed.

In a trading update for the year ended June 30 2025, Sheffield-based MJ Gleeson said the pace of the housing market recovery has not been sufficient to offset the cumulative impact on Gleeson Homes' gross margin of a number of headwinds through the year. The statement added: “These include increased build costs, flat selling prices, the continued use of incentives and several bulk sale transactions.
