Barlia Pavilion brings Castlemilk community together after £1.2m investment in sports complex

A sports complex in the southside of Glasgow has been given a new lease of life thanks to a £1.2m project three years in the making. The Barlia Pavilion, like many sports venues, was closed during the coronavirus pandemic. But once lockdown was lifted, a decision was taken by Glasgow City Council not to re-open it. That prompted the formation of the Castlemilk Community Football Trust (CCFT), a charity built with the help of local people and volunteers.

Measles cases on the rise in Scotland amid drop in vaccination uptake

Measles cases are rising in Scotland, with 22 confirmed cases in the last three months—two fewer than the total number for 2024. It comes as new figures show that there’s been a decrease in the uptake of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations. The first dose is offered to kids between the ages of 12 and 13 months. Last year, 92.8% had received it by 24 months old, rising to 95.1% by age five. Compared to 2020’s figures, that’s a drop of 2.1% and 1.4%.

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service has launched its annual festive drive urging people to come forward to help keep stocks up. The Gorbals is set for further transformation following the submission of demolition proposals for two high-rise blocks of flats. Plans to bring down the tower blocks at 305 and 341 Caledonia Road were presented to Glasgow City Council last month, citing a fire safety risk. An assessment in 2019 found the risk could “only be permanently reduced” by removing cladding and timber balconies installed in the 1990s.
