A Beaumont man has been sentenced to10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child. As part of his plea agreement Jason Watkins will register as a sex offender and cannot own a firearm following his release from prison. The crime against the child occurred in December of 2022.

Early voting gets underway today for the May 3rd election. Mayoral, city council , and school board positions are on the ballot in several southeast Texas communities. Early voting will continue through Friday, April 29th.

The Diocese of Beaumont will hold a special requiem mass Tuesday evening honoring Pope Francis, who passed away early Monday at the age of 88. The mass will be at 6:00 pm at St. Anthony’s Cathedral Basilica 700 Jefferson Street in Beaumont. Bishop David Toups, who was appointed to the diocese by Pope Francis will oversee the mass.

Port Arthur police are investigating a Saturday night shooting at the Prince Hall Apartments on West 14th Street. The shooting victim was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. A second victim was treated at the scene for injuries suffered from an assault. At last report an arrest had not been made.

16 individuals began making appearances in Beaumont federal courtrooms this week in connection with various violations of widespread methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy. The defendants are accused of federal drug and gun violations in Polk, Nacogdoches, and Angelina Counties. If convicted, all 16 face up to 10 years in federal prison.
