And so it comes down to this. 270 days, 37 games and four head coaches later, a season that was supposed to bring with it a shot at a return to the big time ends with Sampdoria clinging on for dear life a the foot of Serie B. It has been a campaign to forget for the Blucerchiati, with all enthusiasm of starting it off with Andrea Pirlo at the helm swiftly washed away by struggles on the pitch, despite plenty of fresh faces on both sides of the white line.

The full-time whistle at Stadio Sinigaglia to signal the end of Como’s clash with Genoa, brought with it an outpouring of emotion. Each player joined a huddle on the pitch, with head coach Cesc Fabregas at the very centre of it, leading the chants to mark the moment. The 1-0 victory, courtesy of Gabriel Strefezza’s second-half strike, had made Serie A safety a mathematical certainty for the newcomers.

Cutting through the throng is a man dressed in white – from his polo shirt down to his trainers.

There may still be all to play for at both ends of Serie B, but Sassuolo already have one eye on next season. Fabio Grosso’s men have steamrollered their way to promotion, confirming their immediate return to Italy’s top flight after just 33 matches. They have done so in some style, too, scoring 75 goals, and are on course to break the records for most wins in a Serie B season and the record points total set by Benevento in 2020.

Cesena have slipped out of the Serie B play-off places in recent weeks but there could be a double celebration this weekend if they can rediscover their form. They headed into Friday’s 2-0 defeat by Sassuolo on the back of their 85th anniversary. To mark the occasion the club released ‘a symbol of identity and belonging’ in the shape of a limited edition commemorative kit.
