PLYMOUTH — A property tax issue providing primary funding to Plymouth cemeteries was narrowly rejected by voters in November 2024. A vote on that same issue Tuesday went a different direction. Plymouth voters in Richland and Huron counties approved the renewal of a 1-mill, five-year property tax to fund the operation and maintenance of the village’s cemeteries.

SHELBY — Shelby voters’ support of Marvin Memorial Library remains strong. City voters approved a five year, 1.75-mill property tax renewal on the primary ballot Tuesday. That renewal is not a new tax — it’s a continuation of existing support, which provides nearly half of the library’s annual budget. According to final, unofficial vote totals from the Richland County Board of Elections, 568 voters were in favor of the measure, while 192 voted against it.

MANSFIELD — A Shelby man was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison after pleading guilty as charged to 15 counts, including six rape charges. David Irwin, 45, pleaded guilty on April 30 to six counts of rape, five counts of sexual battery and four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to Richland County Common Pleas Court records. Irwin will also be registered as a Tier III sex offender, according to court records.

SHELBY — A project years in the making officially began Monday afternoon in Shelby at the corner of Broadway and Main streets. Shelby resident Troy Baker purchased four parcels at the northeast corner of Broadway and Main about four years ago. Several vacant buildings, most in a state of disrepair, were located on the property. Baker expressed interest in a public/private partnership with the Richland County Land Bank to bring new life and purpose back to the corner lot located near downtown.
