A former Ontario man was shot and killed Friday, April 18 after he opened fire on law enforcement in Bartow, Florida after holding his parents hostage. Wayne R. Volz, 34, who last resided in Forte Meade, Florida and is formerly of Victoria Court, Ontario, was a freshman at Ontario High School in 2006, according to a yearbook at the Ohio Genealogical Society in Bellville. It is not clear when or if he graduated.

Destination Mansfield/Richland County has a new Visitor's Guide whose cover shows a group of people learning about Silo, an American barn owl at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Silo is trained to do free flight behaviors, said Amanda Vanderford, curator of animals at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary at 3774 Orweiler Road. "Just like in the photo. Rebecca Owens, executive director of the Richland County Emergency Management Agency, resigned Thursday afternoon, Richland County Commissioner Darrell Banks confirmed. Banks declined further comment. "Please accept this letter as notification that I am resigning from my position as EMA Director effective this date," Owens wrote to commissioners Thursday.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP ― A body was found Easter Sunday morning in debris from an overnight house fire near the intersection of Touby and Carver roads. Richland County Coroner's Investigator Bob Ball said a body was recovered Sunday morning, but only has a preliminary identity established for the deceased. The Montgomery County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy and make a positive identification.

ONTARIO – A Ferguson Road resident told Ontario City Council on Wednesday a large housing project proposed on 51 acres could not legally move forward due to procedural problems and a lack of transparency. The project near Stumbo and Ferguson roads would build 234 single-family homes. An April 9 scheduled meeting of the Ontario Planning Commission was not held and no public notice was made of the meeting being canceled, said Alice Ramsay, a resident of 2380 Ferguson Road, during public comment.
