RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Officials are investigating after a body was found in Rantoul’s Heritage Lake Thursday morning. Rantoul Police confirmed with WCIA that a kayaker came across a man’s body around 6 a.m. The Rantoul Police and Fire Departments both responded, along with a dive team from the Cornbelt Fire Protection District. Most emergency personnel cleared the scene at 7:30 a.m. but some people were still at the lake just after 9 a.m. to look for clues.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — During Kristi Noem’s visit to Springfield on Wednesday, she spoke in front of the former residence of Emma Shafer. Shafer, 24, was found stabbed to death in her apartment in 2023. Her ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Calixto-Pichardo, is accused of killing her. Police are still looking for him. Shafer’s death rocked the city. She was a pillar of the activist community, and had organized for several different causes, including immigrant rights.

Update on 4/29 at 10:55 a.m.CHATHAM, Ill. (WCIA) — The Sangamon County Corner has released the names of three girls and one woman who were killed on Monday when a car drove through the building hosting their after-school program. Coroner Jim Allmon said all four were pronounced dead at the scene. He identified them as:Allmon added that post-mortem procedures were performed on Tuesday. The procedures indicated that they all died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the incident.

Update at 10:40 a.m.Sheriff Walker told WCIA that David Kunze is alive and is en route to an area hospital. Speaking with a reporter, Walker explained that Kunze’s family reported him missing to the Dewitt County Sheriff’s Office around 12:30 a.m. He had been missing for approximately four hours by that point. “Their son went out for a walk at about 8:30 last evening and had not returned,” Walker said.

PIATT COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — One person is dead after a semi-truck collided head-on with another vehicle on I-74 Monday night. The accident happened around 11:53 p.m. on I-74 westbound at milepost 167, just north of Mansfield in Piatt County. State Police said a semi-truck crossed the median and struck a passenger vehicle head-on. One person in that vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene.
