The Queensland government will attempt to lure tourists back to the state's flood-ravaged far north with discounted flights and accommodation. Premier Steven Miles said it was hoped discounts would help businesses recoup lost costs, after footage of the December floods went "viral" and led to millions of dollars worth of cancellations. "We really need to get the message out to Australia and the world that Cairns and Far North Queensland is open for business," Mr Miles said.

A second attempt will be made this morning to evacuate the flood-stricken community of Wujal Wujal after heavy rain scuppered efforts yesterday — but in some more positive news, that rain is finally starting to ease. Premier Steven Miles says another evacuation attempt will be made in the next couple of hours, with plans to take the entire 300-strong population to Cooktown.

The Bureau of Meteorology says heavy rainfall is expected to continue for already-waterlogged areas of Queensland's Far North for most of today. Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy says nine people are trapped on the roof of the Wujal Wujal hospital, with emergency services desperately trying to keep in contact with them. Follow live. In news that will shock no one a week and a half out from Christmas: Brisbane is sweltering hot. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued an official heatwave warning for large parts of the state's south-east, with little relief expected until at least next week. There is the chance of a storm on Saturday, but even with the rain, temperatures could reach up to 37 degrees Celsius.
