Alexis Gamache said it was “a little negligent” for USF to resume classes five days after Hurricane Milton tore through the Tampa Bay area. Though Gamache is grateful for the resources USF has provided, she was dismayed by the university’s plan. “There are other ways to show you care, including giving your students and faculty a little bit more time to recover from natural disasters,” she said.

Craig Huegel climbed into his golf cart Wednesday morning at the Botanical Gardens, with coffee in his cup holder and a shovel in his gloved hands. “There’s never been anything like this,” Huegel, the gardens’ lead curator, said as he surveyed the medicinal garden “ruined” by Hurricane Milton. He said the Gardens will stay closed to the public until the first Tuesday of November — but it will not look the same.

President Rhea Law said the past weeks challenged USF unlike anything the university has experienced since its founding in 1956. Just 13 days apart from each other, Hurricanes Helene and Milton left their mark on the Tampa Bay area. “The road ahead may be difficult, but our USF Bulls community is incredibly resilient, and we will persevere,” Law said. The hurricanes forced USF to shut down its campuses for several days.
