Cumberland pupils eligible for school meals (Image: NQ) MORE than 8,000 children are eligible for free school meals across the Cumberland Council area, according to the latest figures. 21.7 per cent of children are eligible for the free meals are part of a government extension plan. An additional 77,700 children became eligible for free school meals over a year, according to data published by the Department for Education (DfE).

Members of Cumberland Council's planning committee attended a special meeting at the Civic Centre to consider the controversial planning application for a site on land next to the former Unit D on the Kingmoor Park Rockcliffe Estate. During the meeting concerns that the evidence provided was not clear were raised. Councillor Andrew Semple (Cockermouth South, Labour) proposed that they reject the application and, when it was put to the vote five were in favour of rejection with two against.

Plans for the work have been lodged with the planning department of Cumberland Council which outline the proposed demolition of the Calder Hall turbine hall A building. According to a covering letter the building is of conventional construction which is broadly rectangular in plan and was constructed between 1953 and 1956. The letter states: “The overall building construction consists of a steel frame supported on a concrete raft foundation.

It is for a site off Stagstones Road in Edenhall and it proposes a change of use of farmland to equestrian incorporating the building of a covered horse walker, enclosed arena, an unsurfaced access track, and gallop with the provision of a cattle grid. According to a planning statement the site is located on the northern side of Stagstones Road, around 210 metres to the north-west of the junction with the B6412, and about 85 metres to the north of The Luham which is a grade II listed building.

The application for the Lanty Slee, in Millans Park, is broadly supported by Lakes Parish Council who welcomed the addition of a steakhouse to the local offering. Members of the council’s South Lakeland licensing sub-committee are due to meet at Kendal Town Hall in Lowther Street on Wednesday (June 25) to consider the matter. The applicant has applied to allow recorded music indoors between 11pm and midnight Sunday to Thursday and 11pm and 1am on Friday and Saturday.
