    COLUMBIA — Teachers in South Carolina now will be told roughly how much they're going to be paid before signing their employment contracts under a bill Gov. Henry McMaster signed into law May 7. The new law, known as the Educator Assistance Act, also eases some of the requirements around the professional development training teachers have to undergo, and allows them to move to a different part of the state during the school year without risking their teaching license.

    WEST COLUMBIA — The State Board of Education voted to remove 10 more books from all public schools in South Carolina after another wave of complaints about sexual content. The May 6 vote means a total of 21 books have now been pulled from school shelves since the board started hearing complaints last fall under the 2024 state regulation that prohibits depictions of sexual conduct in school materials. Another requires parental consent for a student to read.
