New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency over the weekend due to wildfires along the only major road headed into the Hamptons. Wildfires broke out Saturday along Sunrise Highway in the Pine Barrens region — a 105,000-acre protected forest in Suffolk County. High winds, a dry winter, and damaged trees from an infestation of the invasive southern pine beetle created especially dangerous conditions, according to officials.

Catherine Stoll is a mainstay of Heart of the Hamptons. She logs countless hours sorting clothing donations at the food pantry and emergency assistance program on Meeting House Lane. “I don’t consider my job done at the end of the day and say, ‘Wow, I did some good today,’” Stoll said. “I just say, ‘Okay, tomorrow, I’m going to tackle these three things.’ There is no shortage of something to do, and someone in need.”She came to be like many volunteers post-COVID on Eastern Long Island.

Long Island Congressman Nick LaLota hopes to defend his seat, and possibly the Republican majority in the House of Representatives Tuesday night. LaLota wants a second term in New York’s First Congressional District. He took the vacant seat from Congressman Lee Zeldin, who made an unsuccessful bid to become governor in 2022. As a Navy veteran, most of the legislation he drafted over the past two years focused on protecting U.S. armed forces, National Security, and international affairs.
