For the first time, Samantha Houtz will celebrate Mother’s Day as a mom. Not only does the day mark the Perry County resident’s first as a new mother, but it’s even more significant because of the struggles she and her husband, Matthew, endured to conceive through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), as well as the obstacles Parker, their “miracle baby,” has faced. “I wanted this for so long. I prayed about it. I have envisioned it,” Houtz said, her voice cracking with emotion.

Former state House member Matthew Dowling’s struggles with alcohol forced him from office, but he is now offering a “dry” alternative to the typical bar scene in his southwestern Pennsylvania hometown. Earlier this month, Dowling unveiled the ZERO Proof Lounge in Uniontown, Fayette County, to give those in recovery, such as himself, and anyone wanting to avoid alcohol a sober environment in which to socialize.
