Hiller Road ‘quick build’ concepts solidify

McKINLEYVILLE – The McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee has reached an agreement on three out of four proposals for a temporary project to slow traffic on Hiller Road. At its May 28 meeting, the committee voted unanimously in favor of a Humboldt County Public Works proposal to do a “quick build” project on Hiller Road between Central Avenue and McKinleyville Avenue.

McKINLEYVILLE – Over the past five years, the McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee has held more than 40 public meetings to talk about the McKinleyville Town Center. These have included town hall meetings with pizza, workshops, updates at regularly scheduled monthly meetings and even a joint meeting the McKinleyville Community Services District. Notices of all these meetings were posted on bulletin boards, on social media, websites and in various local news outlets.

HUMBOLDT – A mama bear and her cub journeyed through Eureka, Arcata and Manila over the last two weeks and were roaming around the Samoa Peninsula area as of Friday afternoon, June 21. It’s not unusual for bears to wander into urban areas in Humboldt, but they usually don’t stay long, nor create such a splash on social media like these two brown bears. “It’s quite a saga,” said Peter Tira, an information officer with the Department of Fish & Wildlife (DFW).
County shares bad news about roads with McKMAC

McKINLEYVILLE – In November, Humboldt County voters may decide whether to increase the local sales tax to help repair the county’s crumbling road system. Before the Board of Supervisors decides whether to place a sales tax measure on the ballot, the county is attempting to educate the public about the state of its roads and is soliciting public input.

CAL POLY CAMPUS – Last week was supposed to be finals week at Cal Poly Humboldt, with students taking tests, wrapping up their school assignments and preparing to attend a host of events, including multiple concerts and the annual Hip Hop Conference. Instead, the campus was abruptly shuttered, most events were canceled and classes were forced to be held remotely after Gaza protesters took over and occupied Siemens Hall, where they barricaded the doors and rampaged through offices and classrooms.

McKINLEYVILLE – On a cold, drippy morning last week, McKinleyville celebrated its successful effort to obtain its own 599-acre community forest. “Give it up for McKinleyville!” shouted state Sen. Mike McGuire, who received applause from about two dozen chamber dignitaries and public officials who gathered at the edge of the forest March 27. “This is a big day!”The ribbon cutting took place on a gravel roadway off Murray Road about half a mile uphill from Central Avenue.

Manila trying to take out encampments

MANILA – The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and county social services are making progress in their efforts to remove homeless encampments from the Manila dunes. Back in January, the Manila Community Services District identified 10 camps on property it owns on the west side of the peninsula and its board voted in favor of asking the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Health and Human Services to help remove the camps. As of last week, there were four occupied camps containing eight people.
Manila mourns loss of historic tank, but looks ahead

MANILA – Manila’s landmark redwood water tank was torn down last week to make way for a larger and taller water tank designed to withstand earthquakes. The 22-foot-tall redwood tank, located near Lupin Avenue and Park Street on the west side of State Route 255, has served the community since the late 1960s, providing 100,000 gallons of water storage in case of emergencies, fires or service interruptions.
