    Cork County Council is advising the public to stay away from an area around a recycling facility at Knockgriffin in Midleton, after an overnight fire there. The fire was reported just after midnight and was brought under control at around 4am this morning. There were no injuries. Six units from the county's fire fighting service in Midleton and Cobh attended the blaze. On-site monitoring is continuing there.

    A 62-year-old landlord and former international rower who raped one of his tenants after plying her with drink has been jailed for seven years at the Central Criminal Court. Michael Paul O'Leary, of Four Winds, Ballyarthur, Fermoy in Co Cork, had been convicted by a jury in February. The victim, who waived her right to anonymity so that O'Leary could be identified, said he had taken her right to a normal life and she was effectively living a life sentence.

    A Norwegian energy consultancy company has said it will create 200 new jobs in Ireland over the next two years. The announcement follows the acquisition by DNV of Dublin-based Enviroguide Consulting in July 2023. Enviroguide will be fully integrated into DNV, which will now expand its footprint across the country. DNV was established as a membership organisation in Oslo more than 160 years ago, to assess the seaworthiness of wooden sail ships.

    A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years in jail with the final three years suspended for the murder of 42-year-old father-of-seven Thomas Dooley as he attended a funeral in Tralee, Co Kerry, in October 2022. The man, who was aged 17 years and two months when the attack on Thomas Dooley took place, was not given a life sentence even though he was convicted of the murder last July.
