BOSTON — A man from Lynn was identified as the victim of a fatal shooting in Allston on Saturday morning. On Monday, the Police Department identified the victim as Marco Alfonso Sosa, 32. According to a press release from the department, officers responded to a report of two people shot at 85 E. Newton St. in the city’s South End just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. One victim, later identified as Sosa, was pronounced dead at the scene.

WORCESTER — A Lynn firefighter was honored last week at the state’s 34th annual Firefighter of the Year Awards. Lt. Matt Reddy was recognized as one of 11 recipients of Governor’s Citations for Meritorious Conduct at the Nov. 21 ceremony. “Each year, the Firefighter of the Year Awards recognize acts of bravery, heroism, and service that are truly remarkable – even by the remarkable standards set by Massachusetts firefighters,” Gov. Maura Healey said.

LYNN — Former Mayor, Ward 7 City Councilor, and Postmaster Thomas P. Costin Jr. had a unique relationship with President John F. Kennedy and his father, Joseph Kennedy. This special relationship allowed Costin to pass on a warning to John Kennedy a week before the president’s fateful trip to Dallas in November 1963 – a warning that ultimately went unheeded. However, the story really begins a decade and a half earlier, in 1947.

HURRICANE MILLS, TN. — New London second-grader Jackson Blow-Smith, 7, will compete with the top motocross racers across the nation in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, this week. Beginning Tuesday evening, Jackson will take to the track at the 2023 Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship in competition with the top 42 youth motocross riders in his class from across the nation. Jackson successfully qualifying for this national race did not just happen overnight.

MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant resident Jason Conrad will need to remove his family dog from city limits after the city council voted to affirm a Dangerous Animal Order concerning the pet. “The police department have declared this a vicious animal and it is our job to decide to hold up that order,” Mayor Steve Brimhall explained.

MT. PLEASANT — A Mt. Pleasant family suffered damage to their home and lost their family dog, Tank, in a house fire, Wednesday evening, and the community immediately rallied around them. Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, emergency crews from Mt. Pleasant, New London, and Salem responded to reports of a house fire in the 400-block of North Main Street.

LINCOLN, Ne. — They say third time’s a charm, and that was exactly the case for Washington boys track and field coach Steve Roth over the weekend. Roth was nominated as a National Coach of the Year candidate for the third-straight year in 2023, and in this time, it was his name that was called. Roth, who has coached the Demon track team for 47 years was named National Coach of the Year in the sport of track, beating out seven other finalists. “You never know,” Roth said.

4-Hers participated in the livestock judging contest at the Washington County Fair Monday, July 17. There were a record breaking number of teams competing from all across southeast Iowa. Livestock judging consists of analyzing animals and measuring them against a standard that is commonly accepted as being ideal for that species. In a competition, youth analyze four animals of each species and rank them from best to worst.

Daniel’s oldest brother Tobias and his wife Fannie suggested that Hosanna would visit Ohio and spend a week with them. As I thought about it, she seemed like such a little thing; still, I knew in my heart that it would be another step toward growing up. Another phone conversation with Tobias’ confirmed the plan. “You mean I may go to be their maud?!” She bubbled.
