    St. Joseph County police, along with the Clay Fire and Indiana state fire marshals, are investigating a Granger house fire that killed a man Tuesday. Clay Fire Marshall Ron Melser says the fire started around 1 a.m. in the basement of the family’s two-story home on Lexington Circle off Adams Road. 41-year-old Jennifer Getz and their three children safely escaped and called 911 from a neighbor’s house. Firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke coming out the front door.

    As St. Joseph County department heads start working on their budget requests for next year, Republican county council members are urging freezing or even reducing spending in light of the property tax cuts that state lawmakers recently approved. Property tax cuts in the new state budget signed by Gov. Mike Braun are projected to cost St. Joseph County $5 million next year, $6 million in 2027 and more than $12 million in 2028, according to the county’s financial consultant, Steve Dalton.

    Goshen native Ben Ganger’s win streak on Jeopardy! came to an end Tuesday night but he was upbeat afterward, already studying for his next appearance. The 30-year-old data analyst and opera singer won four games that aired last week and won a fifth game Monday that qualified him for Jeopardy!’s year-end Tournament of Champions. He won $105,915 in total and faced little competition in any of his wins.

    The Berrien County Republican Party plans an event Friday in Stevensville that apparently will give a platform for conspiracy theories that downplay two events: the January 6, 2021 assault on the Capitol and the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Berrien County Republicans are calling the event “Battlefield Michigan: Untold Stories from Michigan Freedom Fighters,” and it’s planned for the American Legion hall in Stevensville.
