    Advocates say it can be incredibly frustrating for military veterans to receive disability benefits for their service-related health problems. The Notre Dame Law School is creating a new veterans law clinic to help. The law school this week announced the new clinic, opening July 1, will have faculty-supervised law students doing the time-consuming, detailed work that veterans need to get their disability claims approved by the Veterans Administration.

    The state of Michigan this week published new advice to further limit the fish you eat that are caught in state waters, based on the amount of so-called “forever chemicals” that the fish contain. Since the 1970s Michigan has issued an annual Eat Safe Fish Guide. It recommends the maximum amount of times you should eat different kinds of fish that are caught in specific rivers, lakes and streams, based on the contaminants found in the fish.

    A visitor to the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan drove into some headstones last week, and now the city clerk is working to see they get repaired. Buchanan City Clerk Kalla Langston focuses mostly on voter registration and elections but she also maintains city records, and that includes the city’s Oak Ridge Cemetery. On Thursday Langston says someone was driving through the cemetery when their vehicle malfunctioned, perhaps a stuck throttle, and they accidentally damaged seven headstones.

    The Elkhart Community Schools board this week approved a contract extension for Superintendent Larry Huff. He’ll receive less than the board initially offered because he feared some in the community might think the board’s initial offer was too generous. The board earlier this month offered to increase Huff’s annual salary from $165,000 to $220,000.

    Despite all the federal and state funding cuts announced so far this year, kids in low-income households will still have access to free breakfast and lunch this summer. In March the Trump administration said it was eliminating $1 billion in funding for schools and food banks to buy locally grown food.
