    A Bremen Amish family’s immediate gesture of forgiveness toward the girl who crashed into their children last week is not unusual, according to an expert on the Amish. If you’ve followed this story, you may have been amazed that the children’s parents quickly invited the teen driver to their home and the children’s funeral on Sunday, saying they hold no anger toward her. Steve Nolt is not so surprised. He’s a former Goshen College professor who now teaches at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania.

    Prosecutors Tuesday filed formal charges against the man they say was impaired when he hit a 17-year-old girl Sunday in South Bend. She remained in critical condition Tuesday. The Goshen teen had been walking with her sister along Mishawaka Avenue as their mother parked the car.

    Mishawaka and St. Joseph County officials have worked together to entice Microsoft to build a data center in Granger, but they’re now in a race against each other to provide water and sewer to the site. The city of Mishawaka has spent over $40 million to develop its newest wellfield north of Douglas Road under Juday Creek Golf Course. They did it to serve growth in the city’s north side, but also anticipating development along the Capital Avenue corridor.

    In this new version of college football, with paid players and annual transfers, some top programs have canceled their spring exhibition games this year. Notre Dame has changed their Blue-Gold Game but they still hope fans will come out on Saturday. Fearing recruiters will come to lure players away with money and promises, Michigan State has cancelled its spring game. Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Oklahoma and Nebraska are among the others that have scrapped the spring tradition.

    After voting in February to buy the historic but long neglected State Theater, the South Bend Redevelopment Commission will consider its first big expenditure on the project. The Mayor James Mueller administration has said it’s not interested in taking on the expense of renovating the 1907 theater. It hopes a buyer will do that. But the city says it does need to spend some money up front before it can market the building.
