BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — An accomplished playwright, screenwriter, stage and film/TV actor and television producer who grew up in Pender County will be remembered for his brilliant writing and his passion for nurturing creative talent in others. Samm-Art Williams died May 13 at the age of 78.

ROCKY POINT, NC (WWAY) — More than a dozen journalism students at Heide Trask High School produce a broadcast for their school each day. Their teacher is Katie Dietzen and her students have been doing it for the last three years. The students meet during second period. During that time, they have to write copy, record segments and edit everything together. The students know they have to collaborate and function as a team in order to meet their deadline each day.

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — About two dozen University of North Carolina Wilmington students stopped by WWAY-TV for a station tour on Tuesday. News Director Marcy Cuevas spoke with students about the skills students need to hone if they’re interested in a career as a producer or reporter. These UNCW students are enrolled in WWAY Evening Anchor Jeff Rivenbark’s Multimedia Journalism class this semester.

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Liquor stores are busy during the holiday season and next year customers in Burgaw will have a new and updated space in which to purchase spirits. Construction is underway for a new ABC store on the U.S. Highway 117 Bypass. The new building will contain office space for the Pender County ABC Board, a retail store and stockroom, and a central warehouse. The center portion of the new building will have space designated for the Pender County ABC Board’s administrative offices.

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — According to the North Carolina State Board of Education Department of Public Instruction, a number of schools in the Cape Fear area are on the 2022-2023 Low-Performing Schools List. In Pender County, seven schools in the district have been determined as “low-performing.” On Monday, the Pender County Board of Education discussed the schools on the list and a plan to improve them.
