MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) - Former Commissioner of Alabama Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Admiral Kent Davis, filed a federal lawsuit against Governor Kay Ivey Wednesday accusing her of defamation, wrongful termination, invasion of privacy and interfering with the business of the State Board of Veteran’s Affairs. The complaint outlines Davis’s effort to use American Rescue Plan Act, or APRA funding, to offer one-time grant money to organizations who offer mental health needs for veterans.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) - Alabama Chief Justice Sarah Stewart entered the first order under the newly-signed Speedy Trial Act to expedite the capital murder trial of Ibraheem Yazeed, accused of kidnapping and killing Homewood teen Aniah Blanchard in 2019. The Speedy Trial Act was signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey in May. Shortly after the bill signing, the attorney general’s office filed the inaugural request to expedite this case.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced his bid for US Senate Thursday. He’s vying for the Senate seat that would be vacated by Sen. Tommy Tuberville who is running for Governor. Marshall announced his intentions to run through a video called, ‘Alabama Strong’, highlighting his accomplishments and relationship with the Trump administration. Marshall is currently in his second term as Attorney General.

Lewis was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey Tuesday to fill a vacancy by outgoing Justice Jay Mitchell, who’s expected to announce his candidacy for another office. “Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama,” said Governor Ivey.
