Century Elementary students petted a variety of animals and took in safety demonstrations during Ag Day on Friday, May 9, behind the school’s bus loop. Brooke Kritzeck, a senior at Park Rapids Area High School and member of the school’s FFA chapter, planned it and brought it about. "I spent a whole trimester this year planning an event for the younger kids to learn more about typical animal and household safety," Kritzeck said.

Uncertainty about federal and state funding has led the Hubbard County Developmental Achievement Center (DAC) to lay off several employees recently. According to DAC Executive Director Laura Johnson, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and its Vocational Rehabilitation Services unit revised their business in January. “That was a very large part of the work that we were doing,” Johnson said.

The Park Rapids School Board, on Monday, May 5, reviewed their April 21 decision not to approve a hat policy brought forward by the high school student council. Board chair Sherry Safratowich said some board members asked to have further discussion on the policy, which proposed rules for students wearing hats during school hours. Superintendent Lance Bagstad said it was an opportunity to consider whether to revisit that decision.

Minnesota Energy Resources presented a giant check to the Park Rapids Area Schools at the school board meeting on Monday, May 5. Jason Splett, business development director with ICS, explained that the $59,988 check was the first rebate for a Century School natural gas project started in 2019. “One of the portions of the (school facilities improvement) project was looking at energy savings,” said Splett.
