BRAINERD — Jaiquavious Ackey returned to the Central Lakes College Raiders lineup and scored a game-high 26 points to go with 11 rebounds during an 88-82 Northern Divison victory over the Rainy River Voyageurs Saturday, Jan. 18. The Raiders handed Rainy River its first conference loss, while they recorded their fifth straight win and moved to 4-0 in division play and 11-8 overall. CLC head coach Jim Russell sees a team, laden with sophomores, finding its roles.

BRAINERD — Lauren Castle and the Brainerd Warriors provided numerous highlights at the Ninth Annual Dave & Connie Maras Holiday Invite Saturday, Dec. 14. Castle wowed the crowd with a personal-best 9.5 vault for third place. Castle finished in the top 10 on the beam and on the floor routine on her way to third in the all-around. “We got a new rule book so coming into the season we didn’t know where scores were going to fall,” Warrior head coach Jessica Lofrano-Larson said.

BARROWS — Two veteran drivers made it back to the winners stand for the first time in over a decade and two drivers walked away with two trophies at the Might Axe Nationals Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31, at North Central Speedway. Brandon Backstrom won the final race of the points season Aug 24 and he claimed two axes with wins in the Sports Compact class.

BARROWS — Tight point races were settled and seven new track champions were crowned Saturday, Aug. 24, during the final night of points racing at North Central Speedway. The tightest finish came in the Hobby Stock feature where Mark Johnson won the feature race but came up one point short of Ryan Kleinschmidt in the battle for the points championship.

The race is the second to last chance for drivers to earn points to qualify for the Countdown. The top 10 drivers in each category advance to NHRA’s version of the postseason.

BARROWS — The Clash of the Compacts highlighted the Saturday, Aug. 18 racing program at North Central Speedway. Not only was a $1,000 prize on the line, the Sport Compact class points battle was the tightest of any class with just one race remaining in the points season. The full moon was shining above the eastern bleachers and the effects were felt as three cars went airborne. Luke Hines, Beau Fries and Korbin Sarazin all went for a wild ride in their car.

BARROWS — The Northern Renegade Sprint Series was the featured class at North Central Speedway Saturday, Aug. 10. After a rainout Saturday, Aug. 3, the drivers raced under clear skies and it was Chris Vogel, who claimed the win in the Wing Sprints and Zach Olson with the win in the Sprints. Just two races remain in the points race and Jacob Jordan’s second-place finish behind Justin Jones allowed him to keep a 13-point lead over David Siercks.

BARROWS โ The annual Ron Johnson Memorial took place Saturday, July 20, at North Central Speedway. It was a special night for Super Stock driver Tim Johnson, his wife Jennifer Johnson who competes in the Sport Compact Class, and his son Andrew Johnson, a fellow Super Stock driver to honor the legacy of Tim's dad. Tim Johnson raced in two events with a third-place finish behind Jack Koranda and Jason Garner in the Super Stock Class Feature.
