PINE RIVER — While graduation for the Pine River-Backus High School class of 2025 was an occasion for celebration, there was bitterness mixed in with the sweetness. A bouquet of flowers here, a handprint and quote on a mortarboard in the second row, a tear being wiped away by students here and there, and a slight hesitation and cracking in Ayla Richards' voice when she spoke of Keylah Kendrick, the classmate who died only 21 days before the May 30 graduation ceremony.

PINE RIVER — Sometimes high school seniors still have years before they will know exactly what they want to do with their lives. But sometimes life gives others some ideas, such as with Kelsey Bergem, a Pine River-Backus High School senior who has learned a great deal of maturity at a young age. Bergem has grown up in a very close family. Her parents once both taught at Pine River-Backus School.

PINE RIVER — Anyone driving through Pine River the weekends of May 17 and 24 may have noticed an uncommon site — a traditional lemonade stand. The first weekend it was on Palmer Drive by the Pine River-Backus School baseball fields. The second weekend it was on Barclay Avenue in front of the Servpro building. Most notable were the proprietors of the stand: Margaret Hedberg, 6, and Joseph Hedberg, 4.

This morning when I was getting photos at the area polling places someone said, "I think it's a big choice. I think it's an easy choice for me, personally." Did you feel that way? Not only about the presidential election, but also local offices? @PAL_EchoJournal

When I was out and about this morning, all the parking lots at the polling places were full of cars. It turns out it was even more crazy in Crosslake. Don't miss today's big event. It'll be one of those events you might regret not going to. @PAL_EchoJournal https://t.co/m0FeAVNU4U

You have to get out and vote today. No question, you don't want to be left out. I've never seen crowds like this at our local polling places. I don't mean in this picture specifically. You'd have to stop by a polling place to know what I mean. https://t.co/69MPywMkJk
