The Webster Furniture Strippers building is like a lot of troubled properties. It's stood vacant at the corner of Gravel and Ridge roads in the hamlet of West Webster for roughly 20 years. Town officials say that though the building is structurally sound, it has deteriorated considerably in that time.

The historic Dentzel carousel at Ontario Beach Park is open for the season, and Monroe County is kicking things off the way it always does — by offering free rides through Memorial Day. This is the carousel's 119th season at the park. After Memorial Day it will be open on weekends until June 20, then it will operate every day of the week. Its hours are noon to 7 p.m.One ride costs a dollar. A wrist band that allows for a full day of rides costs five dollars, and a 12-ride punch card costs $10.

At suburban districts across the Monroe County area, electric school buses were not favored by a majority of voters in several districts, though budgets received strong support from voters. In Hilton, a proposition to purchase an electric school bus failed by 44 votes, but a separate proposition to purchase 11 diesel buses passed. Spencerport voters struck down a similar proposition by a narrower margin.

Monroe County has awarded grants to five school districts to help them reduce and repurpose food waste. The Brighton, Fairport, Penfield, Pittsford, and West Irondequoit school districts will each receive $5,000 to support new and existing efforts to keep food waste out of landfills. For example, Brighton plans to use the grant in part for its existing composting program. In Penfield, the student Environmental Club plans to launch a composting program at the high school.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office will move ahead with its plans to install automated license plate readers at dozens of locations after county legislators passed a measure that was necessary for the project to proceed. Legislators voted 25-4 on Tuesday, with those against it citing concerns about privacy and the political climate.
