    More than half a century after the Thomas Indian School closed, local remaining Native American survivors of the institution are telling their stories as part of a national oral history project. The school, on the Seneca Cattaraugus Territory east of Lake Erie, was one of hundreds across the United States responsible for forced assimilation of Native American children.

    Penfield Central School District staff and teachers are asking the school board to approve some new textbooks for use in their classes. Those include contemporary books like “The Lost Year,” by Katherine Marsh, which was published in 2023. The book interweaves the story of a 13-year-old boy living through the COVID-19 pandemic with his family’s story during the Holodomor, a man-made famine in 1930s Ukraine during Stalin’s regime. That book would be for ninth grade English classes.

    As the Rochester City School District prepares for its new superintendent to start this summer, some administrators are leaving for other opportunities. Deputy Superintendent Ruth Turner is one of those administrators. She was named to former Superintendent Carmine Peluso’s cabinet two years ago, leaving her position on the Board of Regents to rejoin the city schools where she began her career as a social worker. The Regents oversee the New York State Education Department.

    Five Rochester schools began the school in receivership. But one school in particular has the state Education Department's attention. The state Education Department places low-performing schools under receivership status. Those schools receive special attention to help improve student outcomes. State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa said in a letter to the district that Monroe Upper needs a more targeted plan to improve the school.
