READING, MASS. (WHDH) - Greater Boston could see up to 8 inches of snow this weekend, just a couple days after a storm swept through the area Thursday. Most of Massachusetts is expected to get between 5 and 8 inches late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are supposed to see between 3 and 5 inches. Many Bay Staters headed to grocery stores Friday to stock up before the storm, including one Market Basket in Reading.

Temps made it up to around 30 this afternoon, not as cold as these past two afternoons but still below the normal high temp of 36. January is normal our coldest month of the year but this January has been running much colder than the past two. This winter, in general, has featured more cold air than last winter. Check out the number of cold days last winter versus this winter (so far):Dang! Twice as many cold days versus warm days and we still have the rest of January and all of February to go.

I suppose it’s fitting that our coldest week of winter (this week) offers some of the coldest air of the winter we’ll likely experience. Our average high temp this week for Boston is 36 but we’ll be well below that average high all week…Brrrrr. The next two days will be the coldest with afternoon temps only around 20 each day. There will be some wind as well, but thankfully the wind won’t be as powerful as it was a couple of weeks ago.

Moderate sized snowstorm inbound for New England tonight. It’s not a blockbuster and we won’t set any snowfall records with this one but it’s a decent sized storm. We’re also not concerned about strong/damaging wind or coastal flooding either. Travel is the primary disruptor with this storm, but thankfully, it’s a holiday weekend with no school on Monday and many businesses closed. Here is what we know:Snow arrives 4-7pm.

From Red Sox PR: Per BBREF, at 35 degrees, this is the 3rd coldest first pitch temperature recorded at a game at Fenway. The coldest first pitch logged was 34 degrees (done 2x first on was April 15, 2018 vs Baltimore and again on April 17, 2003 vs. Tampa Bay Devil Rays).

Rain showers tonight (a brief period of sleet as well but no travel issues). Showers Thursday morning then mostly cloudy. Warming up through the day with afternoon temps in the 60s. Great weather for the Sox Home Opener on Friday! #7news https://t.co/VOnChTHD6Q
