Texas Republicans are heading into their most competitive GOP primary season for statewide office in over a decade, with hot races for three major statewide battles already turning bitter. Primary battles for the U.S. Senate, attorney general and state comptroller are already simmering even though the March 2026 elections are still nine months away. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is making clear he has no qualms about attacking his top challenger Attorney General Ken Paxton early and often.

The battle over who will implement Gov. Greg Abbott's private school voucher plan is suddenly becoming one of the hottest battles in Texas GOP politics. On Thursday, state Sen. Kelly Hancock, R-North Richland Hills, officially resigned his position in the Legislature and announced he would run for Texas Comptroller, a post that will be in charge of developing and administering Abbott's school voucher program.

Gov. Greg Abbott seemed to get everything he wanted out of the Texas Legislature this year. Beto O'Rourke isn't sure if he's going to run for office again. But the Democrat told me in an interview that's not entirely the point of why he's traveling the state holding rallies this year in a way that's similar to what he did during his campaigns for governor and the U.S. Senate. He has another series of town halls kicking off at 6:30 p.m. on June 27 at Stable Hall in San Antonio.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick displays a range of intoxicating THC products available in Texas to illustrate his concerns that seemingly harmless snacks and drinks pose a danger to public health among children and adults. He urged reporters during a news conference to “take this story seriously,” as Senate Bill 3, which bans all THC products and has been sent to Gov. Greg Abbott's office, May 28, 2025.
