A New Orleans Police Department officer was injured at the Walmart Supercenter in the Lower Garden District on Friday morning, according to NOPD officials and a witness. Shortly after 10:40 a.m., officers responded to a call of an officer injured near 1901 Tchoupitoulas Street. A person at the scene, who declined to be identified, said they witnessed a female officer get dragged by a car before later hearing gunfire.

New Orleans had fewer security measures in place on New Year’s Eve in parts of the French Quarter than during the same celebrations in earlier years, offering the assailant in the deadly attack on Bourbon Street an easier path into the crowds of people he went on to kill or injure. Surveillance videos in the area of the attack show there was room for Shamsud-Din Jabbar to maneuver around the New Orleans Police Department SUV stationed at the entrance of Bourbon Street.

The suspect accused of plowing a truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning has been identified by a law enforcement source as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. Police fatally shot him after the attack, which killed 10 people and injured 35. The source said Jabbar was carrying an ISIS flag in the truck, and authorities have said he was dressed in military gear.
