Nearly 100,000 people in the New Orleans area were in the dark Sunday evening at the height of a power outage that Entergy said was an intentional, "last resort" effort to reduce strain on the power supply. Unlike other recent outages that have been caused by everything from storm damage to Mylar balloons, Sunday’s blackout was a purposeful "load shed" ordered by the regional transmission organization, MISO. A widespread power outage is blanketing the New Orleans area, affecting nearly 100,000 Entergy customers in multiple parishes on one of the hottest days of the season so far. According to the Entergy, more than 52,000 customers in Orleans Parish were without power, including the entire Lakeview and lake area to the Industrial Canal, Gentilly, and parts of Mid-City. Across town, pockets of Treme, the Marigny and much of Uptown and the Garden District also were in the dark.
