    L’ANSE, Mich. (WLUC) - It’s one of the biggest fishing tournaments in Upper Michigan and it’s back. The Baraga County Lake Trout Festival is underway in L’Anse. The main event is a fishing tournament set for Saturday, but the event has grown so, there was a special kick-off tournament on Friday. The festival includes prizes for the top fish in each category, a $100,000 raffle, food vendors and activities for kids. Organizers say the tournament brings a lot of people to the area.

(WLUC) - The Daughters of the American Revolution Boys & Girls Club of Menominee & Marinette was Thursday night’s recipient of the first Superior Health Foundation Superior Impact Award. The award celebrates groups that have created a meaningful impact in their community through support from the SHF. The Boys & Girls Club was given the award for its Zen Den. That’s a sensory room for people to relax in if they’re feeling overstimulated.

    MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - There’s a new way for veterans to stay active in Marquette. The Superior Alliance for Independent Living is offering a summer biking club. The first one is coming Friday, June 20. Each ride includes a picnic dinner and mindfulness activity starting at Superior Mini Storage on Sugarloaf Avenue. SAIL Program Director Tim Schumann says it’s about connecting veterans and enjoying nature.

    MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - TV6 Investigates is diving deeper into the bond debt issuance the city of Marquette has paid down and the role Lakeview Arena plays in drawing down from the city’s general fund. The city of Marquette has paid down $31 million in bonded debt issuance going back to 2007. That bonded debt went from $93.8 million down to $62.8 million. Bonded debt is generally used to fund larger infrastructure projects.

City leaders are continuing efforts to closely manage the budget, years after discovering major debt problems. When Karen Kovacs took office as the city manager for Marquette in 2021, she says it didn’t take long for her to notice serious issues with the city budget. Last year, the city adopted a balanced budget of $25.8 million.
