The Courtenay-Alberni riding is large geographically, and its population has increased since the last election. The riding encompasses an area that includes Tofino to Lantzville to Courtenay. People in the region have traditionally voted for either the NDP or the Conservatives. It was an emotional bail hearing in Nanaimo on Tuesday for two families impacted by a fatal shooting this past September on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Derian Tate, 24, is facing a first-degree murder charge for the killing that happened on Dididaht First Nation land, west of Lake Cowichan. Family members of the shooting victim, 24-year-old Patrick Charleson IV, attended and heard the details of how Crown counsel alleges their son, who was known by the nickname Heman, was killed.

A BC Supreme Court in Vancouver heard arguments about the future of a trucking company in Coombs on Friday. The Royal Bank wants to recall its loan to Kingsley Trucking and pull it into receivership in part because the company has some of the same owners as the San Group, which owes close to $200 million to creditors. In a Vancouver courtroom, a lawyer for RBC argued the Kingsley Group owes $6.7 million, and the bank wants to recall its loans and sell it off.

An organization that’s purchased property south of Parksville aiming to help those coming off the street or from prison has caught the attention of neighbours. At 1888 Kaye Road, a nearly 20-hectare property that used to be a summer camp for kids was recently purchased. The Delancey Street BC Foundation bought it last year for $3.4 million. A group of neighbours in and near Parksville with numerous concerns, has formed and is calling for a different location.
