A couple that had nearly 200 animals seized on their Ladysmith farm has been sentenced to Canada-wide bans on owning farm animals and $10,000 in fines each. An injured Duncan RCMP officer shared how “shattered” an attack outside the RCMP detachment has left him, at a sentencing hearing Monday for the man convicted of the assault. Sgt. A special donation of bikes was loaded onto a truck and trailer in Nanaimo Friday, headed for a remote Island First Nation that captured hearts around the world. “Yeah they’re going to have some fun with them for sure and it’s nice to see them to a group that could really use them,” said Steve Cooper, a volunteer with Nanaimo-based Bikes for Kids. The 17 bikes were donated by Bikes for Kids, to the tiny community of Ehattesaht in Zeballos.

Linda Derksen took a deep breath of fresh air outside Nanaimo’s hospital on Tuesday, grateful to the Nanaimo firefighters and her apartment’s manager for saving her life. “Everybody was super calm, but I’d been traumatized. The roof of that carport is the floor of my bedroom. So he (a firefighter who helped her) said he thinks five minutes more and it would have been awful,” Derkson told CHEK News.
