As soon as the recess bell rings at Errington Elementary, 10-year-old Ember Butt and his friends go running for the soccer field. But thieves have taken away the games the K-Grade 7 students love to play at their rural Mid-Island school, after stealing one of their heavy metal goal posts. “No one can really play soccer anymore, because we only have one net,” Butt told CHEK News, at his Errington school on Tuesday.

An intense search effort on the mid-Island ended tragically on Tuesday afternoon, after three days of searching for a missing man. The remains of a 59-year-old man who vanished early Saturday morning were found near Spider Lake, where he was last seen alive, Mounties say. According to Oceanside RCMP, the death does not appear suspicious. “Criminality is not suspected in the death, and the ongoing investigation continues in conjunction with the BC Coroners Service.

Hauling in heavy nets that were filled with sockeye salmon on Monday, Kelly Charles and his family were exhausted but excited by the catch they were pulling in from Port Alberni’s Somass River. “We’re seeing fish move in, after a month of it being really slow. They actually look really good. A little bit bigger than normal,” said Charles, who was working with his daughter and niece on a family boat Monday.

Karel Carter is holding her cat, Zara, closer than ever, after the silver tabby nearly died Tuesday night in Nanaimo and there was no emergency vet open in the growing Vancouver Island city. “I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, my cat’s going to die,’ because this is a deadly situation. And there’s no vet. There’s no emergency vet,” Carter told CHEK News.
