Watertown Boys’ Basketball Defeated by Bristol Eastern

BRISTOL — In their second of back-to-back non-league games, Watertown High School lost at Bristol Eastern High School, 74-30 in a boys’ basketball contest on February 10. The loss dropped the Warriors to 2-15 overall on the season; the Lancers, meanwhile, continued their solid play with their sixth consecutive win boosting their record to 14-3.
WHS Girls' Basketball Falls to Torrington

WATERTOWN — In their last road game of the regular season, the Watertown High School girls’ basketball team lost at Torrington High School, 49-45 on February 7. The loss was a crucial one for the locals, as the teams came into the game with 2-3 record in the NVL’s Division B standings, but the win lifted the Raiders into sole possession of third place at 4-2 (11-6 overall) while the Warriors fell to 2-4 (10-7 overall).

It’s time. After 30 years, it’s time to recharge, take a few breaths and see what the next chapter of life has in store. As many of you may have already heard, I’m retiring as Sports Editor of Town Times, effective today, so this is my farewell section. I’m not in pursuit of another job, nor did I arrive at this decision lightly nor hastily. It’s time.
WHS PHS Co-Op Hockey Teams Winning Streak Ends

SHELTON — The Watertown-Pomperaug hockey team’s nine-game unbeaten streak came to an end on February 7 when the Warriors dropped a 4-2 decision to Masuk High School at the Twin Rinks in Shelton. Nick Kondub of Masuk led the Panthers with a three-goal hat trick, scoring once in each period. Kondub, a senior, gave Masuk a 1-0 lead at 4:48 of the first period; 63 seconds later, the Warriors tied the score on Noah McGattigan’s goal, assisted by Joe Kovach.
Indoor Track Teams Offer Great Efforts

NEW HAVEN — The Watertown High School Indoor track teams competed in their respective state meets this past weekend and produced some great efforts that led to many season best performances. Junior Eli Crofford led the boys effort in the Class M championships on February 10 by sprinting to a new career best time of 6.99 in the 55 dash.
WHS Boys' Swim Record Stands at 4-3

WATERTOWN — The Watertown High School boys’ swimming and diving team record stood at 4-3 after a 99-88 loss to Holy Cross High School at the Smith Natatorium on February 6. On February 2, Watertown scored a 65-26 victory over the Wilby/Kaynor Co-op team at home. WHS closed out January with a 99-88 loss at Naugatuck High School, stopping a two-meet winning streak.
Watertown-Pomperaug Hockey Wins Over Barlow at Mays Rink

WATERTOWN — A well-rested Watertown-Pomperaug ice hockey team jumped out to 3-0 lead after the second period, then held off late-charging Joel Barlow High School, 4-2 at the Mays Rink on February 3. The victory extended the Warriors’ unbeaten streak to nine games; their last loss was on December 27 against North Haven High School. Vic Vicenzi’s team improved to 10-3-1 overall with the SWC-SCC win over the Falcons, who play in the super-conference’s Division III.

In a month in which a rare in-season coaching change was made, the Warriors finished 1-8 and dropped to 2-12 overall, a record they took into their February 7 home game against Wilby High School.
Watertown Girls' Basketball Makes Stirring Comeback Against Wildcats

SEYMOUR — Trailing Seymour High School 35-24 at halftime, it would have been easy for Watertown High School to think to themselves that it was one of those nights during the 20-game NVL girls’ basketball grind. But something happened in the third and fourth quarters on January 30 on the Wildcats’ home floor which future opponents should take notice of, and that’s that this Warriors team does not think in those terms.
WHS Indoor Track Teams Ready for States

NEW HAVEN — The Watertown High School boys and girls indoor track and field teams traveled to New Haven and competed in the Jack Long Invitational, one of two recent meets on their busy schedule. On the boys side, sophomore Owen Cipriano had a great day as he ran a season best time of 2:54 in the 1000 and followed it up with an excellent effort in the 3200 that saw him place in the top eight in both events.
