The sun is beating down on Ellon when I set out to review five of the Aberdeenshire town’s pubs and bars. Though Ellon is pretty small, there are a range of pubs to suit different tastes and occasions. Having grown up just 15 minutes away from Ellon, I’ve visited some of these venues before. But to give them each a fair judging, I visited these Ellon pubs on the same Saturday afternoon to review each on atmosphere, drinks offering and décor.

The Horn Milk Bar on the A90 has ordered “double” stock to prepare for 20,000 Aberdeen fans heading to the Scottish Cup Final this Saturday. Owner Kenny Farquharson, who is rooting for Aberdeen, says his team at the Errol diner, will be ready to fuel the hungry Dons as they make their way to Hampden Park in Glasgow. “We know we are going to be mobbed on Saturday – there’s no doubt about that,” says Kenny. “We know fans will be looking for a hearty fill.

After moving back home to Lossiemouth, single mum Joanne Wood began brewing up plans for her next exciting challenge. A walk along Lossiemouth’s West Beach served as the inspiration for the 56-year-old’s now successful Lossie Coffee Cart. Launched back in May 2022, the cart is now pitched by the River Lossie all year round, frequented by locals and visitors looking for a coffee and a homemade “fancy piece” to enjoy on their walk. “I so appreciate my customers,” says Joanne.

I could never imagine running a café with my sisters. But siblings Alex and Josh McKenzie are running a smooth operation at Cloggy House in Dyce. The café, located at Kirkhill Industrial Estate, promises a “no frills” experience for hungry customers. And there is a mammoth queue inside when we visit in the lunchtime peak. The menu includes burgers, wraps, soup, salads, baked potatoes and sandwiches, as well as daily specials.
