According to Carey, 37% of all New York state fatalities are blamed on drugged driving and they are seeing an increase. Even though cannabis is legal, it is illegal to drive with it in your system. "If you feel different, you drive different," says Carey.  She urges people to use defensive driving on the roads and to stay focused.

Lightner talks about how she became aware of the drugged driving problem in this country and that no one, not even MADD, was doing anything. At the time, distracted driving was becoming an issue, but no one organization was focused on it. That's when she decided to start We Save Lives - a coalition of 60 to 70 organizations to focus on distracted and drugged driving.

JoDee Kenney sat down with Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli to talk about a bill he has been championing in the state legislature that would close a current loophole. According to Magnarelli, to be arrested and charged with drugged driving in New York state, you have to be pulled over, an officer has to know you are impaired and know the exact drug you are taking, and that drug has to be on a list.
